Owl Visit

burrowing owls
Photographer: Unknown. Our visitors resembled these diurnal Burrowing Owls.

The other night I was fortunate enough to encounter three baby owls. (Since they could fly they were probably adolescents or teens). They fluttered between the huge evergreens that line the backyard occasionally diving onto the grass to pick up bits of food. The little babes were very aware of my presence (and my flame’s). Their glowing, yellow eyes appeared to be staring straight into my soul dissecting my very existence.

We gave them the names Artemis, Archimedes, and Athena. Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the hunt, chastity and nature; a strong and athletic female archetype, Archimedes is a Greek inventor, astronomer, engineer, philosopher and mathematician, and Athena is the Greek Goddess of wisdom, courage and justice. The adorable fledglings began to almost dance with us as we bobbed and weaved our heads at each other – bringing us a beautiful and needed message.

Owls symbolize sage wisdom as they are able to see into the past and future utilizing their microscopic and telescopic vision. Having this ability to perceive more than what appears to be in front of us is a magnificent gift. We are able to see past the alluded perception and clearly “read between the lines” on a grander or more precise vantage point. The phrase “remain a silent observer” continued to repeat during their visit. I felt this from the three owls as they keenly watched over us.

It reminded me that listening is a very underestimated and yet, important half of communication. The following day I saw a lecture about how powerful it is to listen to everyone else in the room before voicing one’s own beliefs or opinions. “Silence is golden” as it is the food for our crown chakra, which has been going through a major download over this past week.

When we are silent, we are able to hear more of our surroundings. Owls have a fine tuned sense of hearing. This allows them to find prey they might miss by sight. When we fine tune our own ability to listen, we are able to interpret the true underlying meaning of the words we are hearing. Finding the truth in cryptic messages builds our understanding of others, the world, and life.

Owl totems are also considered omens of death in many cultures. My personal interpretation to their visit was the death of a facet of ourselves (not physical death). The transformations we have all been undergoing have moments of extreme intensity as we shed pieces of ourselves and our pasts. We are asked to release these fears that continuously hinder our growth.

Letting go of ingrained ways of being is a process and takes time – hence why you have probably heard it repetitively. Just like how one season of heavy rainfall will not account for six years of a drought, one day of actively shedding layers will not account for years upon years of accumulated build up. This can include anything from negative self talk leading to detrimental core beliefs, unproductive and hurtful behavior patterns, or damaging and harmful coping skills.

Keep your eyes open and ears tuned as you enter this month of July. Take heed the owl’s message, and notice your own totems coming into your life Eternal Waking Beauties!

  1. Love owls. I visit a rescue for wildlife and hold them. There’s all types there. Their eyes change colour according to the moon cycle. They are such mystical creatures. Your post is full of information. Thank you. I really do love your blog posts. You are so insightful. It’s all education. I learn through you.

      1. I didn’t know either. They should teach stuff like this in schools. How the planets aid us with our connectiveness. It’s common sense isn’t it. There is a strip of sea in UK you can only drive across when the moon is a certain way. It’s fact. It affects the tide. Children know very little about all this.
