Hummingbird Symbolism

Hummingbirds are magical little creatures with the spirits of sprites. I was fortunate enough to have been visited by one of these little beings of light two days in a row. These beautifully assorted friends symbolize joy, swiftness, and endurance.

They are seen as a sign of happiness due to their uplifting, whimsical nature. Their wings beat so fast we cannot even see them move as if they are propelled by sheer pixie dust. The bright coloring of their plumage stimulates the euphoric energies of our being, and their taste for delicious nectar fills us with their same sweet disposition.

As their wings move faster than the eye can see, hummingbirds are able to hover with immense agility as they change direction and pace at the drop of a dime. They are the only birds who can fly forward and backward as well as side to side. The complexity of their movements paired with their high energy can be hard to keep up with at times, especially while trying to capture a mesmerizing picture like the one above.

Hummingbirds are able to showcase their endurance through their determination to reach the delectable nectar deep within each flower. Sometimes they have to sift through bitter and tough outer layers in order to reach their liquid gold. Hummingbirds can also travel extremely long distances, (even over large bodies of water), in a single trip.

Hummingbird Message

Hummingbirds remind us that life is not as serious as we think, and can be experienced with a lighthearted smile. It is okay to believe in magic and the unknown mysteries of life that make our heart flutter. We are encouraged to continue to have faith in the positive wonders that life has to bring. There are more than enough reasons to find simple delights in the world around us.

The swift movements of not only the wings of a hummingbird, but also their patterns of flight show us that we are capable of infinite combinations of infinite possibilities. They share the knowledge that we are limitless in our movements, decisions, and actions. We are capable of flexibility when faced with instant change as we swiftly adjust to the elements. Hummingbirds spread the message that we are able, competent beings.

Finally, we are being told that if we are hardworking and determined, we will be able to experience the sweet victory of achieving our goals. It is important to never give up because success can be just around the corner as we remain tenaciously focused. There are various treasures that we each hold near and dear to our hearts. We all have the potential to bask in the wealth of our own riches.

Let’s keep our senses open to these uplifting workers as they pollinate the beautiful flowers that surround us during this time. We must enjoy the little things in life with energy and determination as we work toward our goals. Believe in the magic we hold Eternal Waking Beauties because we are powerful and sweet beings just like the beautiful Hummingbird.

Owl Visit

burrowing owls
Photographer: Unknown. Our visitors resembled these diurnal Burrowing Owls.

The other night I was fortunate enough to encounter three baby owls. (Since they could fly they were probably adolescents or teens). They fluttered between the huge evergreens that line the backyard occasionally diving onto the grass to pick up bits of food. The little babes were very aware of my presence (and my flame’s). Their glowing, yellow eyes appeared to be staring straight into my soul dissecting my very existence.

We gave them the names Artemis, Archimedes, and Athena. Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the hunt, chastity and nature; a strong and athletic female archetype, Archimedes is a Greek inventor, astronomer, engineer, philosopher and mathematician, and Athena is the Greek Goddess of wisdom, courage and justice. The adorable fledglings began to almost dance with us as we bobbed and weaved our heads at each other – bringing us a beautiful and needed message.

Owls symbolize sage wisdom as they are able to see into the past and future utilizing their microscopic and telescopic vision. Having this ability to perceive more than what appears to be in front of us is a magnificent gift. We are able to see past the alluded perception and clearly “read between the lines” on a grander or more precise vantage point. The phrase “remain a silent observer” continued to repeat during their visit. I felt this from the three owls as they keenly watched over us.

It reminded me that listening is a very underestimated and yet, important half of communication. The following day I saw a lecture about how powerful it is to listen to everyone else in the room before voicing one’s own beliefs or opinions. “Silence is golden” as it is the food for our crown chakra, which has been going through a major download over this past week.

When we are silent, we are able to hear more of our surroundings. Owls have a fine tuned sense of hearing. This allows them to find prey they might miss by sight. When we fine tune our own ability to listen, we are able to interpret the true underlying meaning of the words we are hearing. Finding the truth in cryptic messages builds our understanding of others, the world, and life.

Owl totems are also considered omens of death in many cultures. My personal interpretation to their visit was the death of a facet of ourselves (not physical death). The transformations we have all been undergoing have moments of extreme intensity as we shed pieces of ourselves and our pasts. We are asked to release these fears that continuously hinder our growth.

Letting go of ingrained ways of being is a process and takes time – hence why you have probably heard it repetitively. Just like how one season of heavy rainfall will not account for six years of a drought, one day of actively shedding layers will not account for years upon years of accumulated build up. This can include anything from negative self talk leading to detrimental core beliefs, unproductive and hurtful behavior patterns, or damaging and harmful coping skills.

Keep your eyes open and ears tuned as you enter this month of July. Take heed the owl’s message, and notice your own totems coming into your life Eternal Waking Beauties!

Honey Bee Encounter

She gazed out as the trees wrestled with glee. Their voices were the most prevelant of the wind chatter. The breeze cooled down her face.

“It’s time to go.” She said to herself as she looked back inside.

The warmth of the day felt so good as she enveloped herself in the sun’s rays. Parched, she reached for the glass as beads of water rolled down the side. The single cube clinked as she began chugging down the sweet nectar of life.

It was uncanny how quiet the world seemed despite the restless waves of air pouring over her. She couldn’t hear the routine songs for the day, nor the mindless chatter of endless languages that passed her stoop.

“Mr. Magpie must be taking a break from his tiresome post.” Her inner dialogue continued. “Perhaps he has a family to tend to.”

Then, she felt his presence. The spirit of a hardworking, focused, and magical ethereal being. Beating his wings lightning fast procuring a reverberating hum that jolted through her chest.

So sweet and soft the tired, little bee buzzed along looking for respite from his exhausting day. She willed him to use her humble space as a haven while he regenerated his life force for the trip home.

“Thank you for your giving nature.” He whispered with a grateful sigh.

Water pooled in the shallow dish of the lavender sitting between them as he lapped up the cool oceans of refreshing life. With one final glance he returned to the skies.

I was originally planning on writing about Honey Bees as a Totem or spirit animal, however, the article below does such an immaculate job; I wouldn’t do it the same justice. Enjoy this glorious website!

What is a Totem?

A Totem is a spirit, plant, animal, or symbol that represents a family, clan, or group. Totems often represent the heart and soul of each individual and their ancestry. It is believed that when a Totem enters our life, they are bringing messages of safe advice to aid in our current life situation. When we hear the word “Totem” we often think of Totem poles. These beautiful structures are carvings made from trees along the Northwest American coastline. Each pole tells a story of the clan’s history, acknowledges the passing of a loved one, or even shames someone for bad behavior. Regardless of the representation of the Totem pole, the various symbols and animals used allow the viewer to understand its meaning.

The Dragonfly’s Story

Dragonflies are born in ponds or streams, where they spend the first two years of life. Water represents our subconscious and emotional subtle body. When we are young, we often allow our subconscious to rule our minds as our dreams and fantasies overflow from within. As children, we also allow our emotions to overtake us since we do not yet know how to accept or express them properly. After the first two years, dragonflies sprout wings and take to the skies. Air controls our intellect and communication. When we transform into adulthood, we are expected to balance both our mental and emotional subtle bodies. This allows us to feel fully, think rationally, and communicate effectively.

Dragonfly Totem

The dragonfly represents self-realization, transformation, and adaptability. It enters our life with the message of remembering to live with a lighthearted, effervescent joy as we morph into our higher selves. We are challenged to break away from old habits, and create a new life based on our desires and intentions. Let the dragonfly be your guide as you soar through the mist of confusion and dismay into the fresh air of awakening.
